Understanding Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's Disease (PD) Facts
  • Parkinson's is a chronic, progressive, neurologic disorder

  • PD can affect people in their 20s to their 90s; however, most are diagnosed over the age of 60

  • It is unclear what causes PD, but environmental factors, agent orange, and genetics could play a role

  • There is no cure, however, with a proper course of treatment, most people with the disease can live an enjoyable and fulfilling life

  • Exercise is the only thing that slows the progression of PD

  • Physical therapy and speech therapy are very important for daily living

  • Over 5,000 people live with PD in northern Nevada

We may each have our own individual Parkinson’s, but we all share one thing in common. Hope.

Treatment Options Include:

  • Several classes of medications

  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
